PROJECT: L’Arche à Cognac, is a recognised medico-social institution. It welcomes and cares for nearly 90 people with intellectual disabilities in community activities, work and living areas. The non-profit organisation is part of the worldwide network of Arche communities founded by Father Jean Vanier. L’Arche’s mission is to give people with intellectual disabilities a place in society and to raise awareness in society. In Cognac, L’Arche has four foyers or residential communities. Six to ten people with disabilities live in each of these foyers, accompanied by three to five assistants (employees, but also volunteers as part of the Service Civique, a kind of community service). In the foyers, each person has their own room, but they all come together as in a family for meals, domestic gatherings, celebrations in the common rooms. L’Arche also has a large room where people with disabilities can spend their day. The aim is for each person to develop their own skills here and to strengthen their self-esteem.
