Workcamp in Bremerhaven: From the eyes of our FÖJ-Volunteer Ahsen

Bremerhaven, August 2024

****

Hi! I am Ahsen, I am from Turkiye and this year I am doing an FÖJ at Internationaler Bauorden where I manage the Instagram account and support the camps. In addition to my 3 Workcamps in 2023’s summer, I would like to share some insights from my 4th Workcamp with Bauorden ☺️

There was surely a lot to do, but for the first few days the whole group was separated into two : 2 people (one of them being me) stayed at the Baustelle and did various work. All the others went to the hotel to paint the promised 4 rooms. The group was completely reunited after a few days, but until then we surely had breakfast and lunch all together.

While we were at the Baustelle; I remember:

  1.  filling the holes in the ceiling,
  2.  scraping out the material on the outside wall of the building with the help of high heat (was very tiring)
  3. building a shelf
  4. covering the staircase area in the first floor
  5. building a door
  6. cleaning the wooden beams (there were 3-4 huge ones)
  7. building a table (the cube-like structure to cover the pipes on the floor)
  8. scraping out the material on the stairs’ surface until the first floor
  9. vacuuming the water in a room in the basement and dumping it outside with buckets
  10. scraping out the tiles in one line in the backyard
  11. digging a hole in the scraped area (80 cm deep)
  12. vacuuming the water out the hole
  13. carrying some tools and a big pile of stones from the Baustelle to the storage which is 5 minutes away

Free time : We had enough free time (maybe the people who painted had less for some days). We mostly walked around Bremerhaven port and watched a couple mesmerizing sunsets 🙂

*

*

*

Workload : Normal amount. Mostly more people were needed – especially on the hole digging and the stone carrying on the last day.

*

*

Communication : Didn’t cause any problems or accidents.

*

*

People Impressions : Everyone was nice and respectful 🙂

*

*

*

Food : We were provided with various vegetarian meals. I personally liked some of them, and some not so much – but it all worked out at the end 🙂

Accommodation : It was really comfortable. At Seaside Port Hotel, we stayed in the rooms for 2 people.

Remarks : I can easily say that I totally benefited from this Workcamp: I practiced and learned more German, and I made some German friends 🙂 After all, alles halb so wild… It was also pretty nice to put my experience and all the learning I did last year with The 6-Week-Programme into practice.
